ActiveMedia
Digital Asset Managment at the Centre for Japanese and Korean Studies at Leiden University.
At the end of 1990's it became clear to me that if I wanted to advance with the integration of the computer in education we needed a (international)partner. Although e-learning was hot is those days, funding for small departments like hours was hard to find.
We found a partner at Leuven University in Belgium with whom we drew up the original plan for Japanology of the Low Lands. One of the issues we had to solve if we wanted to cooperate is the sharing, storing and management of digital assets. So we decided to look for a system that could store files in all kind of formats, that would support Asian languages and that could accessed with a browser 24 hours day and 7 days a week. We eventually picked a system called MAMBO which later changed its name to ActiveMedia. Activemedia was able to fulfill all the requirements and was reasonably priced for a business application.
In the years after the introduction ActiveMedia served as a underlying digital asset managment system for many projects at Leiden University.
