Japanology of the Low Lands
Project for the promotion of the use of information technology in education at the Centre for Japanese Studies at LEiden Un iversity

Japanology of the Low Lands or JLL JLL originates from a project which started in 2001, in order to cope with the general request for realisation of larger and better integration of the computer in the education and find a solution for the continuously increasing pressure of workload which arose from the introduction of the Bachelor/master - scheme in higher education in the Netherlands. The JLL-project then was divided in four projects: the development of a portal for Japanology for the Dutch language area , the development of content for a multimedia database for education and research, and initiation of an on-line Japanese-Dutch dictionary project and the realisation of an image bank.

Based on a very positive recommendation of the scientifically technical Council on behalf of the Dutch government the JLL-project was awarded a grant by the foundation SURF, the cooperation organisation for the higher education and research in the field of network service and information and communication technology in the Netherlands mid-2002. From 23 applicants, from which 6 qualified, JLL came in first.

As per academic year 2004 -2005 JLL became finally incorporated in the Department of Japanese language and culture with the task to implement the results so far in the education and to develop initiatives for new projects with respect to the further integration of information technology in education.
